MN CCD wraps up a successful Town Hall Season- Breaking Through Poverty

The MN CCD 2013 Town Hall Forums season has come to a close. In total, members of the MN CCD co-hosted 12 town hall forums across the state, covering 22 legislative districts and providing testimony to 35 legislators in attendance.

These powerful events saw over 600 people attend, with 133 of those people providing personal testimony to legislative leaders from their area. Testimony ranged from issues of the 5% Campaign and the strong need for 5% rate increase for home and community based services in 2014, to the impact that “spend downs” have on people and the need to raise the income and asset limitation on individuals with disabilities accessing Medical Assistance Home and Community Based Services. Testimony also pointed out the need for adequate transportation and the positive benefits provided by Direct Support Professionals (DSPs).

The impact of the personal testimony given was powerful. Many legislators commented on the importance of these issues and the need for people in the disability community to continue telling their stories.

Submit a story and win

In the coming months the MN CCD will be sharing some of the testimony that was given at the town hall forums through its blog. We would like to encourage you to share your story as well.

Time after time we are reminded by legislators that putting a face to these often very complex issues, is the most important thing we can do as grassroots advocates. Therefore, the MN CCD is launching its “Submit a Story and Win” program! By using our telling your story resources, we encourage you to take some time and share your own story.

Your story can be submitted to our Project Coordinator at MN-CCD, Jo Erbes, at Stories can be submitted beginning on January 6th, 2014, making this a great Holiday activity!

“Save the Date” for our Legislative Kick-off Event

The stories that we receive will be posted to our blog and shared with members of the community, as well as legislators. A gift card will be given to a random winner, which will be drawn at our 2014 Legislative Kick-off event.

As we gear up for the 2014 legislative session, The MN CCD will be hosting its Annual 2014 Legislative Kick-off event on Friday, February 14th from 11:30-2:00 at the Goodwill EasterSeals in St. Paul.

With the theme of “I Heart Advocacy”, attendees will hear from leaders in the disability community, as well as legislative leaders, on what they can expect in the 2014 legislative session and how they can become more involved.

You can look for more information on this exciting event following the Holiday Season!

Thank you, thank you, thank you

The MN CCD would like to thank everyone that attended a town hall forum, or those that could not attend but have shared their story with their legislator. By advocating for these important issues, we are truly making a difference in the lives on Minnesotans with disabilities.
